The FIFA under 17 Football World Cup is being held in India in October 2017. The Central government has initiated Mission XI million to promote football in schools across India. As part of this initiative the Government of Maharashtra has launched the MAHARASHTRA MISSION 1 MILLION by which it will promote this sport in Maharashtra by distributing sporting equipments, organising tournaments and maintaining a regular follow up with the schools. This programme will be an ongoing one with the objective of making India a premier soccer playing country.
St Xavier’s High School Fort under the stewardship of Principal Ms Jennifer Dias, ably supported by Sports Director Bro. Bruno D’souza and Sports Instructors Mr. Dilip Coriea and Mr. Amit, is a leading light of this Mission.
The Honourable Education Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Vinod Tawde visited the school today to get a hands on feeling of the preparedness of the school boys for the events which kick off tomorrow, to witness the practice games and being a football player himself, to play with the boys.
I was privileged and honoured to be invited by The Principal to be present at school during the Minister’s visit.

It was a day to remember – the 6th January 2014, our school Sports Day. Not just because it was our 145th Annual Athlete Meet. Not even because our ex-student Mr. Russel Athaide presented us with three beautiful SPECIAL championship Trophies. Not also for the three lovely Hercules Cycles donated by Ms. Neha Mehta, the manager of Arvind Cycle Mart , Kalbadevi Road. But it was for all the wonderful spirit of camaraderie and friendly rivalry of our boys vying for a place in the sun. Yes, it was really a cold morning but there was the warmth of our staff and students.
The Parade of the Houses at the start was assessed by three sharp judges from the Mumbai City Police handpicked by inspector Mr. Pascoal D’Souza of the ATS.
This was followed by the Torch Relay (Olympic fashion) by Rishi Golhar, the Inter-School mile champion, Jay Sarankula the Discus Throw record breaker, Varun Parmar our Taekwondo Champion and the pocket sized Mohammad Ali , our Inter-School Boxing champion (under-12 years), Master Anas Shaikh. Our dynamic and ebullient Principal Mrs. Jennifer Dias then lit the SPORTS FLAME.
Our Chief Guests, the highly inventive and successful Athletic Coach Mr. Christopher Alvares, and the charming and pretty Mrs. Ayesha Alvares, an enterprising and innovative teacher declared the Athletic Meet open.
After the recitation of the Sportsman’s prayer and the taking of the Sportman’s Oath by our School Captain, Master Shubhankar Poojari, by by his Assistant Master Kaizer Mogal, the races began in ernest. There were some tricky races for the School Staff and the Parents too.
All eyes were set on the Championship Trophies, the SPECIAL PRIZE and of course the cycles. Master Vedant Jathar was declared the FASTEST ATHLETE of the meet winning his Special Prize and a Hercules Cycle. Master Rishikesh Golhar derived the title XAVIER MARATHON MAN for his winning effort in the 3000m Run. He merited his Grand Trophy and the 2nd Hercules cycle. The third Hercules cycle went to Master Jay Sarankula for his record-breaking effort in the Discus Throw. He broke the previous record of 26.26 mts set by Brian D’ Costa (U-14) in the year 2000 by four full metres.
The Age Group Champions were:
(U-8) Krrish Surve
(U-10) Rajveer Singh
(U-12) Rohan More and Nilesh Singh (Joint Champions)
(U-14) Adriel D’Costa
(U-16) Sagar Patel
There were excellent and colourful displays put by the children and ably directed by Ms. Margaret Acharya (drill), Mr. Amit Karande (Cathirthenics) and Mr. Rohidas Shirke (Taekwondo). This lent variety to the generality of running events. The Tug-of-War Trophy was claimed by the (Blue) CLAVER HOUSE while the March Past Trophy went to the (Yellow) GONZAGA HOUSE . The overall Trophy for the highest number of points in the athletic events was merited by the green (BERCHMANS HOUSE). Our School Marching Band lent a touch of class to the proceedings. In an excellent speech Chief Guest, Mr. Christopher Alvares brought out the promise that our budding athletes hold and motivated and inspired many in the crowd to take that giant steps on to the tracks that would lead to better fitness, better health.
It was indeed a perfect Sports Day.
